Statement:
As a person who is often travelling back and forth between his village and other cities, almost as a migrating bird, I am constantly made aware of the many unexpected demands and consequences the changing environment has that end up pushing me to take up a new identity or reform myself accordingly. It is also not just the person who is travelling who is affected, but his family, and all the new relationships that he makes. There is a discomfort of wanting to belong, of wanting to achieve and overcome, so we put on masks or act in certain ways that is only a facade of aspired power in a moment of anxiety. This series of events breeds a conflict in our everyday existence, between the rational and the irrational. It punctures the functional by demanding compromises.
My intentions are to visualise these varied dysfunctional power relationships by objectivizing personal insecurities through satire, while making use of popular idioms. The irony is a provocation of thought that uses humour to portray struggles and mistakes. This drama yields a story-like quality yet does not fully become a narrative. They stake a claim in the mysterious, in the becoming of the dramatic. Hence, I tend to use theatrical settings with stark contrasts or subtleties of varying darkness. The inspiration comes from the way my grandmother and mother would tell me old stories during childhood under the lantern, which here I use to transform the personal to depict the familial breaching into social situations.
The explorative process is from the individual – from my own history and derivative of my place in the changing society – to the universal – becoming part of others’ experiences. My works, thus, attempt to bridge a multiplicity of space, time and experience using elements that are affiliated with my past as well as the evident present.
